Attendance Policy 2013/2014

Brighton High School Attendance Policy 2013/2014

Changes have been made to the Brighton High School Attendance Policy for the 2013-2014 School Year.  Please note these changes are in relationship to how a student can overcome previously earned “NG’s” from the prior years and how the “U” is being utilized for the 2013-14 school year.

What is a “U”?

The “U” that replaces the formerly utilized "NG" indicates that the student has exceeded the threshold of 6 points related to attendance in a single class period and will need to remediate his/her attendance before the letter grade will appear.  The “U” stands for unsatisfactory in the citizenship column on a report card. To release this “U” the student will need to attend the Attendance Remediation Class otherwise known as ARC.

How do I avoid loss of credit due to attendance?

Loss of credit in a class is avoided by keeping your attendance score below 7 points per period. This is accomplished by avoiding absences and tardies in each period. If your score is 7 or higher, you must attend ARC in order to lower your attendance score and regain citizenship. (See how do I calculate my attendance score.)

How do I calculate my attendance score?

To calculate your attendance score, you must look up your attendance record on Skyward and add the attendance codes in a specific class. (The attendance office staff will assist you in assessing your attendance related questions.) Skyward’s attendance record does not distinguish between grading periods, so it is important to only add the attendance codes between the beginning and end of the grading period/trimester in question. Attendance codes vary in value. The attendance codes which most often affect a student are A (Unexcused)=7 points, Z (Truancy)=7 points, G (Guardian Excused)= 1 point, and T (Tardy)= 1 point.

How do I check my attendance record?

You can look up your attendance record on Skyward. To log on to Skyward you will need your Skyward Login and password. Once you log in to Skyward, click “attendance” on the left hand side, and then the “by day” tab towards the top of the page. A list of dates that have an attendance code will be displayed. Dates for which you have no attendance infractions will not appear. Use this list to calculate your attendance score.

How do I get my Skyward Login and Password?

The Skyward login and passwords are provided in your registration packet. If a student has lost his/her Login or password, you can ask a teacher for a progress report letter that will include this information. Parents, if you need a copy of your Login or password, visit the Attendance Office.

What is the result of a “U”?

A “U” stands for unsatisfactory citizenship.  This means that if you have earned 2 or more “Unsatisfactory (U)” in a single class throughout the school year, then the ability to participate in extra curricular activities (tryouts, games, drama, choir, etc.), receive parking passes, and even walking at graduation will be placed in jeopardy.  A “U” is triggered when tardies and absences have raised your attendance score above the “U” threshold (7 points or higher). If you have a “U”, you must attend ARC in order to lower your score below the threshold and regain Citizenship for the class.

What triggers a “U” for a class?

When points accumulate to be greater than six in a particular class, a “U” is triggered in the attendance log. Attendance points are calculated by class period. Even though you may have 7 G’s (each with a value of 1) on your attendance record, it will only trigger a “U” if all of those G’s are for one specific class and exceed the 6 point threshold.

How much time do I have make up a “U”

Students can make up a “U” in the current trimester

Students can make up a “U” in the prior trimester up until mid-trimester of the current trimester.

Students can make up a “U” for trimesters that are more than one trimester prior with approval from the Attendance Appeals Committee.

What if I did not make up my NG from a previous school year?

Students must submit a letter to the appeals committee indicating their name, number of ARCS to make up from previous trimester, how many arcs they have already made up, what classes they would like the future arc credit to be used for, and what the student is willing to do to remediate past behavior and how to fix future attendance.  This letter is to be turned in to the Assistant Principal assigned to work with the student.  The letter and appeal will then be submitted to the attendance appeals committee.  The committee will then decide how to move forward with making up NG from prior years and U’s for the current year.

How do I attend Attendance Recovery Class (ARC)?

To attend ARC:

1. Go to the main office, tell the secretary that you need to attend Attendance Recovery Class (ARC).

  • Free ARC Fridays: On occasion, the school provides free ARC opportunities on Fridays. Student who choose to attend the Free ARC Friday Sessions will be credited for a single ARC during the current Trimester.
  • Two-for-one ARC nights are held once time per trimester. (These are only credited to current trimester ARC and will not be credited to past trimesters.)
  • Pay $3.00 and get a receipt for current trimester ARC. Students, who loose the receipt before the arc is completed or after the ARC is served, must pay for a second ARC receipt. The office will not reprint receipts
  • Pay $5.00 and get a receipt for NG/U for recovery applied to past trimesters. Students, who loose the receipt before the arc is completed or after the ARC is served, must pay for a second ARC receipt. The office will not reprint receipts

2. Go to the Attendance office and look on the white board for the next available ARC session.  Note the time and location.  ARC is held before and after school (6 am and 3 pm) on most days. ARC lasts one hour.

3. Attend the morning or afternoon ARC session of your choice.

     A. Expectations.

  1. Be on time.
  2. Bring the receipt from the main office to your arc class (it is your ticket to get in).

  3. Bring academic work (homework, reading,
  4. Do not bring electronic devices

4. Fill out the form given to you by the ARC instructor.  Make sure to fill it out completely and accurately so the ARC reduces the attendance score for the class of your choice.  Get a copy of the form as proof you attended ARC and keep it in case there is a recording error.

Why do I need to check-in and check-out?

Following proper check-in/out procedures helps the school know you are safe and results in no attendance points recorded in the class in which you are checking in or out. Remember to bring proper documentation for any classes you might miss in between check-out and checking-in.

How do I check-in and check-out?

Check-out- Parents request a student to be checked out by calling the attendance office and telling the secretaries what time the student needs to be checked out (preferably with enough time so the check-out slip can be delivered to the student in a timely manner). The student shows the check out slip to the teacher when it is time to leave. Keep the slip with you when traveling to or from school.

Check-In- During first period, students need to go straight to first period and then have the parent call later acknowledging the absence or have the student bring the documentation to the attendance office later. (See what is documentation). If a student arrives during the passing period they may go right to class, and have a parent call acknowledging the absence later. During class periods other than first, parents may call to inform the attendance office that the student will be arriving at school at a particular time. The student will need to check in at the attendance office when arriving to school.

What is documentation?

Documentation is a legitimate document for medical reasons (doctor, dentist, orthodontist notes are required), bereavement (funeral program, obituary are required), or legal obligations (court appearance, summons are required). Proper documentation, provided within 5 days of the absence, will change an A or G to an E. An E can be appealed to the attendance committee and will usually result in a waiver of the absence at no cost to the student.

How do I avoid attendance issues?

Avoid unexcused absences. All truancies will trigger an ARC. All absences are recorded as an unexcused absence until a Parent/Guardian/Caretaker calls in to verify their knowledge of the absence. Parents must call within 5 days of the absence. After five days the unexcused absence must be appealed to be changed, and will likely cost $5 dollars to do so.

Be on time. Tardies add up fast. Though attending a single ARC will neutralize the score of 3 tardies, being on time is much better than ARC an hour before or after school.

Be thrifty. You have 6 points that can be accrued per class for each tri-mester. You also have 10 vacation release days a year. This adds up to 28 absences you could have in a class in a school year without having to attend a single ARC. This totals almost 6 weeks of school. There is rarely any reason why a student should have to go to a single ARC.

Leave a buffer. We rarely know when we will become sick or some unexpected event will disrupt our routine, so use your absences wisely. If you use up your 6 excused absences on days you could have attended class, and then you unexpectedly get a cold, you will probably be going to ARC.

Get documentation- If you miss school for a funeral, a doctor verified illness, or a court appearance, get documentation of the event and turn it into the attendance office. Doing so will change the absence to an “F”. If your attendance score for a class goes over 6 and you have an F on your attendance record, you can submit an appeal to the attendance committee. Properly documented absences will most likely be waived at no cost to you.

Plan ahead- If you know you will be missing school, consider using your vacation release. If you apply for vacation release in the attendance office 48 hours in advance, your absences will not count against your attendance score. In addition, you can apply for a pre-excused absence. Pre-excusal is limited to special circumstances such as religious observances or surgery. If you apply for pre-excused release in the attendance office 7 days in advance, the absences will not count against your attendance score.
